Controlling canine obesity

Living the Country Life Radio Program

Obesity is a major problem in the United States -- for both people and dogs. And for both species, the solution is eating healthier and exercising. If you have a fenced-in area where your dogs can safely run, turn them loose, throw a stick or ball for them, and let them chase a rabbit or two. Listen to our radio show and learn how to tell if your dog is obese, and what other steps you can take to get him in shape.

Radio interview source: Dr. Kim Knap, canine rehabilitation practitioner, University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine

Learn more about canine obesity:

Shape Up Pup: The University of Illinois Veterinary Teaching Hospital created this program to tailor weight loss plans for dogs. Their facilities even include a doggy gym!

Underground electronic pet fencing: This is a great way to give your dog room to run safely, and burn off those calories!

FDA approves canine obesity medication: If diet and exercise aren't enough, you may want to talk with your veterinarian about medication to help your dog lose weight.
