On this Minnesota farm, Great Pyrenees guard the family flock.

Furry protectors

On Milk and Honey Farm near Cokato, Minnesota, Bob and Sarah Lea have almost completely done away with their need for the supermarket by raising ducks and turkeys, fruits and vegetables, and especially sheep. The couple lives in an area where coyotes and other predators thrive. The survival of their flock often falls on a few furry shoulders -- their Great Pyrenees guard dogs.

We have 2 GP/border collie cross. Linus is 160+ Lbs much more GP than BC, while Lucy is 75Lbs and her coat, general appearance, and her behavior characteristics (such as herding instinct) are much more BC. Both R beautiful in temperament and appearance, but share a common BC malady (siezure diorder> We absolutley love them, and in our home, they are indoor dogs, and yes, Linus sleeps on the bed. Leaves little room for my wife and I but he is toasty warm on those frosty WI winter nights.

I have a 1/2 great pryenees(her father) and 1/2 black lab (her mother) she was an accident no doubt, very loyal and faithful dog, great watch dog, won't even let my husband or kids in the house without barking and growling. She is an inside dog here in MN, quite spoiled rotten going on 5 years old this spring. She looks like an ivory lab with the extra skin of a pyr. She has her own chair in her own room and won't eat unless I am sitting next to her, but she does have a food fetish.

I havehad a rescue Pyr for a year. He is wonderful. Would like to know how old he is, vets have differed from 2 to 6 years old. He is a house and yard dog and watches over us, 4 cats and 5 other dogs. He also keeps the neighborhood free of lions, tigers and bears with periodical warning barking. We love him.

I would like to state that I find it irresponsible of this mag for saying you can profit from the selling of these puppies...look on the web and on the rescue sites and you will find that GP dogs are one of the most common breeds that you will find. Over population of dogs should be a bigger concern for mag called country living...because anyone living in the country knows how many dogs get dumped out here.
