Guard llamas

Living the Country Life Radio

If you're having problems keeping dogs and coyotes away from your sheep, a guard llama may be the perfect solution. Since their ancestors were hunted by mountain lions and wild dogs, llamas have an instinctual fear of canine-like animals. They will typically charge a suspicious visitor. If the predator does not retreat, they will kick and stomp until they believe the danger has passed. Llamas also very good at warning you of any intruders, since they'll emit a loud scream that sounds a bit like an angry goose. One llama can generally guard up to 2,000 sheep over 300 acres.
