Raising dairy goats

Living the Country Life Radio Program

More than just friendly pets, dairy goats can be a practical addition to your acreage. With proper care, one or two goats can furnish fresh milk for your family on a year-round basis. If you wish, you can even start a small business selling products made from goat's milk at your local farmer's market. Popular breeds of dairy goats include Toggenburg, Saanen, Nubian, Alpine, and American La Mancha. However, it's important to find a reputable breeder before purchasing your first goats. Registered and pedigreed animals are recommended, even though the cost is slightly higher. As with most things in life, you get what you pay for.

Another wonderful dairy breed that wasn't mentioned, and that is recovering from near extinction, as listed on the American Livestock Conservancy list, are the Nigerian Dwarf! Two does, kept in an alternating cycle, can keep your family in milk with between 1-2 quarts a day, each! Just enough for a family of 4, or make cheese, yogurts, keifr, or even soap!
