The benefits of a silvopasture system

Living the Country Life Radio Program

A silvopasture is a combination of trees and grazing land. This type of system allows acreage owners to plant money-making hardwood trees without losing use of the land. Cattle, sheep, goats and horses can graze in the wooded pasture as the trees grow. Listen to the Living the Country Life Radio Program to learn about USDA incentives for establishing silvopastures.

Radio interview source: Greg Ruark, director, USDA National Agroforestry Center

For more information on silvopasture systems, we recommend the following Web sites:

USDA Forest Service: Silvopastures provide a dual income opportunity for landowners, while establishing wildlife habitat and helping prevent forest fires.

Agroforestry.net: Learn how to plan, develop and maintain a successful silvopasture system.

Silvopasture library: Download a number of PDFs, which detail the different types of silvopasture systems, and learn how to establish one on your property.
