  • Glories of Sheep Milk

    Sheep milk is rich in fat, solids, and minerals. This makes it ideal for making cheese and yogurt, and spa items, like soap and lotion. Sheep milk is also lower in lactose than cow's milk, making it more palatable for lactose-intolerant consumers.

    There are sheep breeds specifically bred for milk production; they include the Lacaune and East Friesian. East Friesian have the highest milk production and are the most used in the United States for diary.

  • Milking Facilities

    You'll need a barn or shed that can comfortably accomodate ewes and their lambs. Setting up a small milking parlor for sheep isn't much different than for goats or cattle except for the attachment sizes.

  • Dairy Flock Maintenance

    In dairy flocks, lambs are weaned at around 30 days old. This allows the producer to have the ewes in the milking parlor while they're still producing adequate amounts of milk. At peak production, ewes will give 1 to 2 gallons of milk per day.
