4 Winter Tips to Keep your Critters Safe and Warm

These four easy habits will help to ensure that your pet stays cozy this winter.
  • Prevent Parching

Indoor heat sucks air dry. Make sure pets stay hydrated with constant access to fresh water, says Louise Murray, DVM, vice president of New York City's ASPCA Animal Project.

  • Protect Paws and Fur

Even dogs who love the snow can use some protection when they go out into the elements: Use a paw wax such as Musher's Secret (from $13, amazon.com) to keeps paws from drying and cracking from de-icers. If your dog will let you, try booties for added warmth, says Murray, who recommends waterproof fabric and a snug fit. If your dog isn't sporting the thickest coat of fur, add a sweater or a jacket to keep them cozy.

  • De-Ice

Give your dog a warm rubdown with a towel after coming home from a winter walk. Be sure to get between the toes, where ice and salt can get lodged.
