  • Babe

Sarah Rogers sent in this photo of her Rottweiler, Babe. "She is absolutely the smartest dog I have ever owned," Sarah says. "She is especially good at rounding up the chickens to put them in the house when I need to put them in early. If I need to catch one, she will catch and hold it until I can reach her and never cause it harm. She is quiet and friendly to guests when she knows they are welcome."

"All our dogs are special but on our acreage of three horses, a donkey and two miniature horses the mini dogs rule it all," says her owner. "Roxy, the min pin, truly believes she is a big Doberman," she says, adding that her bark is much bigger than her bite. Winston is her follower and the larger dogs run and hide when Roxy starts to bark."

  • Deuce and Denali

"Here are my babies," says owner Heidi Engle. Both full-blooded, registered Rottweilers with sweet temperaments, Deuce is five years old and Denali is one. "We live on seven acres out in the country with lots of room for them to play," she says. "Most people are deathly afraid of coming in our yard because of these two. Denali is still in her 'friendly' stage and mostly just wags her little stub of a tail when someone new comes over." Deuce, on the other hand, is the 'guard' dog and his size and bark are enough to keep most intruders in their vehicles wishing they would of minded the 'beware of dogs' sign posted in our yard.

  • Duke

Duke is almost eight years old and is part golden retriever, part collie. "He loves playing with our grandkids and rolling in the snow like a puppy," says his owner. "He is our 'best friend' in the world! Smart and kind, but protective as well. We have two cats that Duke loves to play with." With over three acres to play on in western Michigan, Duke has a lot of space to run and play. "Almost every day he takes a dip in the creek on the edge of our property. It's hard to keep him from the water...he loves to swim!"

  • Wally

Wally was adopted from the Humane Society in Wisconsin. Only about 20 months old, he has already survived Blastomycosis, an illness that only about 40 percent of dogs survive. "Wally and my hubby just finished obedience training and hubby is working on hunting commands," says his owner. "Although Wally lost the site in his left eye due to the illness, he does quite well! We plan to take Wally to my uncle's South Dakota farm land this fall for bird hunting. Can't wait to see him use his natural skills."

She loves the laid-back country lifestyle and spends her days digging holes, chasing birds, or chasing us while we ride our four-wheeler. "She's my three boys' four-legged best friend," she says. "Loveable and sweet to the bone but not afraid to show her 'furious' side when other dogs are in our yard. Laying down the law and protecting 'her' land."

  • Nishna

This photo of Nishna, a 12-year-old Chesapeake Bay Retriever, was submitted by owner Eric Lonnevik. An avid hunter her whole life, Nishna was very well trained and was one of the few dogs that would actually hold a piece of steak on her nose until Eric would tell her it's okay to eat it. She also enjoyed playing co-pilot in the tractor during field work. Unfortunately, Nishna recently passed away.

  • Winnie

"Winnie, our nine month old yellow Labrador Retriever, is anything but a city dog," says her owners, Heather and Andy Blanchette. "She'll walk on a leash, but would rather be running through the hay field out back, eating grass with the cows up the street on the farm or swimming at the lake. In the long cold winters, she likes to help carry in firewood to warm the stove. In the Summer, as you can see, she's a Mahindra dog. When we're outside, she's either beside us, or taking a slow ride in a lap," they say. "We're pretty sure there isn't a city bone in this dog."
