A place for poultry

Raising these feathered friends can bring joy and entertainment to your acreage. Here's how one creative guy makes poultry a part of his life.

In pursuit of poultry
Tim Bowsher and baby chicks
With a background in biology and a keen curiosity, Tim Bowsher has developed his own varieties of chickens.

Tim Bowsher has just changed out of his postal uniform into a favorite t-shirt. Set aside are work shoes that see 10 miles of pavement a day in a city route. Now it's time for Tim to pursue his favorite poultry interests.

Greeting him outside the front door are two peahens affectionately referred to as The Gabore Sisters, strutting around the grounds in their assumed grandeur. Roosters announce the arrival of visitors to the acreage. A wandering pair of Burmese Red Jungle Fowl forages for bugs and mice in the foxglove.

Tim's 5 acres are situated along one of the most beautiful roads in Washtenaw County, Michigan. Thick, old, twisted maple trees line the dirt road, creating a green canopy over the curved driveway in front of the house. The property is part of an original farmstead dating back to the early nineteenth century. Tim and his wife, Sharon, have raised two sons here, along with a menagerie of animals and plants.

Four types of chickens
Tim Bowsher's focus is on raising strong, genetically pure chickens to exhibit and sell at poultry shows throughout the year. Clockwise from top left: Burmese Red Jungle Fowl, Ameraucana, Bantam Bubalaya, and Milli Fleur d'Uccle.
