A new wind farm is under construction south of Marshalltown, Iowa. Bob and I took a tour with cousin Charlie Damman, who lives near Melbourne. There are about 50 turbines going up, with more to be added later. We saw several stages of construction on the huge bases. I don’t want to guess how much concrete is involved. The turbines are huge, so the bases need to be substantial. You can see the size in the bottom photo with Bob and Charlie standing on one almost completed. The turbines will start producing electricity by the end of the year. You can read more about the RPM Access wind project here: http://www.rpmaccess.com/laurel.html
Another wind farm with 70 turbines north of Marshalltown was announced last month. Construction will start in 2012. Iowa is becoming the windy state.
