I bought a bunch of frozen sausage links on sale, and when I took a box out of the freezer the other day, I noticed a recipe on the back of the box. Sometimes “on-the-box” recipes don’t amount to much, but this one looked too good to pass up … plus I had all the ingredients on hand, so we were in business.
12 oz. pkg. maple sausage links
2/3 cup milk
1 egg, beaten
2 Tbsp. butter or marg, melted
1 cup buttermilk baking mix (I used whole wheat)
2 Tbsp. sugar
1/4 tsp. cinnamon
1/4 tsp. nutmeg
1 cup finely chopped apple (Go, Slap Chop!)
Heat oven to 400. Grease 10″ round pie plate. Prepare sausage links. Meanwhile, in large bowl, combine egg, milk, and melted butter. In separate bowl, combine baking mix, sugar, cinnamon and nutmeg. Add to milk mixture. Stir in apple. Spread in pie plate. Arrange sausage links on batter. Bake 15-20 minutes or until golden brown. Serve with syrup.
This has become a family favorite! Luckily I have plenty more boxes of sausage. (It was a great deal so I bought a bunch … plus I love having tons of food in my freezer. It makes me feel secure.)
