In 2004, Daniel and Sharon Densmore of Cleveland, Georgia, designed and built their dream barn. The family's intent was to have horses, goats, and other animals on their acreage at the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains.
However, no animal has ever set hoof in that barn, but many brides and grooms have taken their first steps as a couple.
It all started when Daniel and Sharon's daughter Audrey Densmore-Borchers (BORE'-churs) became engaged in 2004. She wanted to get married in an open field on the farm, and hold the reception in the barn. She says her father thought she was nuts, but her mother's wheels started turning.
"It was beautiful, and word-of-mouth started after our wedding, and people started contacting my parents and asking to rent the barn for either birthday parties, or weddings, or whatever," she says. "And now it has become where we're booked every weekend with weddings and it's become quite a business seven-years later."
The second floor of the barn was originally meant for storage and a hayloft. When it was clear the building was going to be used as an event center, the family finished off the second floor, adding a touch of old in with the new.
It has antique oak wood accents, which is from my great-grandfather's barn," says Audrey. "It was starting to fall in, so we rescued the wood from that barn and it was a family event. We took all the old barn wood off of it, it was over 100-years old. That is accented all in the upstairs. It'll take your breath, it's so beautiful."
Audrey says during the week they host school groups for a variety of activities, including panning for gold in the creek, learning about the lifecycle of a butterfly, and going on hayrides.
Her parents dream of raising animals has come true as well. They built another barn for them – just not quite as grand.
