New use for bales, ladders

All Around The Homestead: A page written by our readers

Straw garden

Our home did not have good soil for planting a summer garden, so we planted our tomatoes in bales of wheat straw. We had to water more often, but our kitchen was supplied with a bounty of tomatoes.

Coops and ladders

I built a roost for the coop with a section of wood ladder. It attaches to the wall with two chains and two hinges so it swings up when cleaning. A screen door hook is mounted to the wall to hold the ladder.

– Jay Betemps, Batavia, Ohio
