Wood fence maintenance

Living the Country Life Radio Program

Wood fences are both attractive and practical, but they do require regular maintenance. Autumn is a great time of year to get in the habit of checking your fence to make sure it's in top condition. Check to see that the posts and rails are secure, remembering that rails are most likely to decay at the spots where they join posts. Look for signs of rot and trim back surrounding vegetation to help keep excess moisture away from the wood. Once you've made all necessary repairs, finish the job by using a high-quality exterior-grade paint or stain to add an extra layer of protection to the fence.
