Loving a log home

Heading north from Manistique to Munising, Michigan, Route 94 stretches about 30 miles through deep dappled green forests. Made tunnel-like with walls of towering pine and birch trunks, and a roof of cloud draped cerulean sky, the road is punctuated with small lakes, small camps, small general stores, small homes, all dwarfed by the vast woodlands that include the Hiawatha National Forrest. Past dirt track roads with names like "Green Box" and "Mint Farm." Past several scenic waterfall sites where the road winds through rolling glacial hills. Off the main pavement and onto a wide sandy lake access, tucked between two of the world's largest fresh water lakes, Dave and Judy Olson are in the process of making their new house in Michigan's Upper Peninsula their home.

Judy, a West Virginia native from east of Charleston, and Dave, whose roots go deep in the farmlands of Albert Lea, Minnesota, delight in the challenge of a new setting. When asked how these most recently farm-belt Iowans found this place in the woods, Judy very matter of factly answered, "On the Web."
