Fun at the Iowa State Fair

Betsy Freese visited the Iowa State Fair this summer and took some fun photos. Take a look!
  • Big horse

Look at the size of this beautiful horse. I was walking through the horse barn when I heard him coming up behind me. When I took the photo it spooked him, but he recovered quickly.

  • Ugliest Boar

The Reserve Big Boar was a hideous fellow with a scabby hide who, when I took a photo of him, turned and lumbered toward me with feed dripping out of his mouth. I was glad for the gate between us. A security guard sat in a chair by his pen all day "to protect kids," he told me.

  • More of the Ugliest Boar

  • Big Boar

No trip to the Iowa State Fair would be complete without seeing the Big Boar. I hit the fair early in the morning so I could park on the street by the hog barn for free, then be at the pen for the morning feeding. The big boars only stand up twice a day, at feeding time.

  • More of the Big Boar

"Freight Train" weighs 1,259 pounds and is owned by Mike Cormaney of Webster City, Iowa.

  • Butter Shawn Johnson

We Iowans are so proud of our little spark plug, Shawn Johnson, who trains across town. She has performed magnificently at the Olympics. Shawn has been cast in a golden glow at the Iowa State Fair, made of butter and standing in front of the butter cow.
