Go find farmers today, give them big hugs, and thank them for the food and fiber they produce for our nation. Today is National Ag Day and the theme this year is “Food for Life.” I’m proud to say that my employer, Meredith Agrimedia and Living the Country Life, are sponsors of this important recognition.

Annette Degnan is the chair of the Agriculture Council of America. She says this day was created to acknowledge and celebrate the many, many contributions that agriculture makes in all of our lives.

"On National Ag Day we encourage every American to first of all understand how food and fiber is produced to really get a better understanding of the essential role of agriculture in maintaining not only our rural economies, but our national economies too," says Degnan. "Appreciate the role that agriculture plays in producing safe, abundant, and affordable food."

Most of the Ag Day activities are happening at a grassroots level all over the country from events in grocery stores, to field trips to local farms. Degnan says one of the centerpieces is having 100 of the top FFA student leaders in Washington, D.C.

"These young people visit their elected officials from their states, and they spend time talking to congressional staff and aides, and in many instances congressmen, about why they are so excited about a future in agriculture," she says. "We will have an event at the Press Club, where we will invite media to interact with growers and with others involved directly in Ag Day."
