Create an outdoor kitchen that's all your own

Simple or elaborate

It's a lot easier than remodeling an indoor kitchen. Structural modifications aren't required, because an existing backyard patio makes a great foundation. Setups can range in price from $1,000 for a small counter with a simple grill to $30,000 or more for high-end versions with a smorgasbord of appliances and creature comforts.

"We have a 42-inch pop-up television in a hot tub, next to an emission green burning fireplace, next to complete kitchen outdoor units," Loyd says. "I mean, from entertainment to relaxing to feeding, we have it all."

And then all I'd need is for my husband Bob to fan me with a palm leaf and feed me grapes!

How elaborate you get depends on what features are important to you and how often you cook outside. For example, if you barbecue only once a week or so, a grill and a counter-high storage cabinet covered with tile or stucco should do it. The cabinet will protect supplies from the weather and the countertop will provide work space when you get down to cooking. The climate is also a huge factor.
