11 sure-fire winter boredom busters

Don't let cabin fever bring you down this winter! Why stay cooped up inside when there's so much to do out in the snow? Bundle up, pack some hot chocolate, and go have some fun!
  • Reel in the lunkers

    We can't guarantee results like these, but you can catch a tasty dinner when you go ice fishing on your pond or at the lake. If you don't have an ice fishing house on skids like this one, you can find pop-up houses at sporting goods stores.

  • Shoot a hat trick!

    Strap on your skates, grab some sticks and a puck, and play a pick-up game of pond hockey! Invite some friends over, or go for a game of one-on-one. If you want to make lines on the ice, add food coloring to a spray bottle full of water,  and spray onto the ice!

  • Try winter camping

    Some people don't like tent camping even when the weather is perfect, but die-hard campers know winter is a great time to sleep under the stars! Make sure to put a tarp down under your tent to keep moisture out, invest in a cold-weather sleeping bag, some long johns, and plenty of hand warmers, and go for it! Not sure if winter camping is for you? Give it a test run in your backyard, so you can easily head for home if you need to.

  • Get a bird's-eye view of wildlife

    Winter is a great time to use a trail camera. Hike into your timber and mount one to a tree, or strap it to a tree in your backyard. Increase your chances of catching wildlife on film by scattering some corn on the ground. After a few days, load the images onto your computer and enjoy the show!
