A Boho Porch Makeover

Keeping the basic historic elements of their home, homeowners of this basic, four-square house welcomed a makeover to turn their porch into a cozy, Bohemian-inspired retreat ripe with eclectic style. The makeover ingredients adhered to a muted theme of inexpensive, organic materials such as wood, rusted metal, concrete, rope, and simple florals.

    Before the Porch Makeover

The porch on this turn-of-the-century home was ample but underutilized. The homeowners wanted to give it a laid-back, Bohemian style so they could comfortably spend more time visiting with neighbors and relaxing.

Bring the Garden to the Porch

The organic shapes of various plants play up a casual vibe. Complementing the row of Endless Summer hydrangeas that line the porch, an assortment of pretty containers ties the porch to the surrounding garden.

    Privacy & Shade

Layering a wide bamboo shade and sheer, billowing curtains adds a touch of privacy, softens edges, and brings a casual ease to the area. Pillows in various patterns, clad in unique weather-resistant fabrics, also soften the edges of furniture and plump up the comfort level.

    Porch Swing

Rather than hanging from metal chain, the cedar swing is suspended by chunky, twisted sisal rope for a warmer, natural feel. An outdoor sisal rug extends the texture and color of the rope to the floor.

  • Entry Lighting

The homeowners wanted to establish a stationary welcoming view as visitors approached. Nestled next to the front door and aligned with the front steps, this bench, planter, and wall art with sconce is the perfect solution. Both the wall art and bench were DIY projects that added an interesting focal point to a traditional space.

  • Use of Mirrors

A large mirror reflects light and adds style and gravitas to the space by visually making the retreat seem larger. This plank-framed wall mirror embodies the casual, rustic style of the homeowners.

    Soften the Edges

A soft throw blanket offers coziness on cool evenings. The organic pattern of the pillow fabric reinforces the natural elements of the porch and surrounding landscaping.

    Sitting Area

On the opposite end of the porch, a sitting area beckons friends to visit and watch the world go by. Wicker chairs made plush with cushions combine with modern, weathered patinas to give a relaxed and timeless feel. The coffee table, a DIY project, has oversize casters for mobility. The pendant lamp, also handmade, uses lightweight concrete in a creative and unexpected way.
