Hiring a landscaper

Living the Country Life Radio Program with Betsy Freese

Leave it to the pros

Radio interview source: Jason Cupp, 2008 president, Professional Landcare Network

I enjoy planting flowers, but that's about the extent of my landscaping expertise! I'm envious of the professionals who can take an average yard and turn it into paradise. Of course, if you hire someone who's a little on the "shady" side, it could be anything but paradise.

Many landscaping companies will say that word of mouth is their best advertising. Ask your friends and neighbors who they've worked with before. They'll give you honest answers about who's good and who to avoid.

Jason Cupp is a professional landscaper and says if you can't get any good references, then do a little research before you hire someone.

"Number one, ask how long they have been in business," Cupp says. "You probably don't want to entertain hiring somebody that doesn't have some longevity in your market. Take a look at kind of all the professional stuff -- do they have insurance; can they provide a certificate of insurance; are they a certified landscape professional or a certified landscape technician?"

Decide what you would like to have done, then check out a job in progress that's similar to your landscaping goals. Examine the quality of the work and the professionalism of the crew. If you like them, make an appointment.
