How to Properly Use Digging Tools

Your soil and garden type will dictate which tools you need and how to use them. Here are some tips for safe and effective digging.
  • Take it Easier

Gardening is a whole-body activity. Ease into the season and avoid charging into chores to prevent injury. Always use your legs and arms - not your back - to bear any load, and bend your knees when lifting.

Most tools don't come with instruction manuals. Avoid accidents and damaged tools by using implements only for their intended purpose. Be aware of how to hold a tool as well as how to stand or sit when you use it.

  • Can You Dig It?

Protect your back when digging, lifting, and taking on other weight-bearing chores. The right way to lift is to bend at the knees and use your legs and arms - not your back - to lift a load. Scoop lighter loads to strike an efficient rhythm.

  • Get a Grip

Use short-handled tools for leverage tasks, such as scooping, scraping, and digging. Keep your grip light, letting the tool handle twist and turn, as you put your weight behind the push. Shift your weight with the movement of the tool.

  • Rock and Roll

Use long-handled tools for reaching tasks, such as raking and hoeing. A relaxed stance, with body bent over the tool, allows weight to shift and rock with the motion of the tool - forward and back - to power the movement.

  • Correct Digging

Use a shovel appropirately by pushing the blade straight down into the soil. Keep your back upright and relaxed.

  • Use Your Weight

Place a foot firmly on the shovel tread (flat or rolled edges at back of blade) and press down.
