Make a Raised Bed

Inexpensive hardware store supplies come together to create a productive raised bed garden.
  • The Perfect Little Garden

The right size for hosting a petite vegetable garden, this 2x3-foot raised bed is made using corrugated window wells. Raised beds are a great solution if your soil is rocky or drains poorly. They are also an easy and attractive way to garden in a small yard. Add a trellis and grow cucumbers and pole beans vertically for even more fresh produce.

  • Step 1

Position one side of a window well near the top of a 4x4 post. Attach the window well to the post with lag screws. Repeat on the other side of the window well. Attach the second window well to the opposite side of the 4x4 pots, forming the raised bed.

  • Step 2

Dig two post holes and position the raised bed. Burying the posts anchors the bed, prevent it from shifting during freeze and thaw cycles. The bottom of the window well should be flush with the ground.

  • Step 3

Fill the garden bed with high-quality topsoil or a mixture of topsoil and compost. Quality potting soil is also a good choice. Add soil to within 2 inches of the top of the raised bed.
