Our Favorite Pergolas

A pergola, an outdoor structure that usually offers shade from the midday sun, can be as simple or ornate as the homeowners desire. Here are a few of the pergolas that we’ve admired for their ability to look attractive, provide shelter, and support vines or vertical gardens.
This pergola is attached to the house and provides a roof for an outside sitting room.
A corrugated roof provides shelter and drainage for this outdoor kitchen. Note the rows of succulent planters that form a "wall" on this pergola.
A pergola can also serve to frame an outdoor room.
In Mediterranean countries, dining areas are often located outside under a pergola covered in grape or flowering vines and situated to catch cool breezes.
This pergola supports bamboo mats, which provide filtered light to the dining area below, amid a rooftop garden.
To transition from inside to outdoors, a pergola offers pretty protection over the entry.
Free-standing pergolas create focal points in the yard and an alluring destination spot.
Pergolas can fit into any garden scheme, whether traditional or Tuscan or modern.
