Know Your Tomatoes

With hundreds of tasty varieties, you can spend summer after summer growing these easy and delicious backyard fruits.
  • Site

Tomatoes grow best in highly fertile, well-drained, slightly acidic soil. Add amendments to improve the planting site. Tomato seeds can be sown directly in the soil, but most home gardeners purchase seedlings to plant in a sunny location after the last frost date. Plant small bush tomatoes 11/2 to 2 feet part, and larger types 3 to 4 feet apart if not staked.

TRain indeterminate plants up stakes or grow them inside wire cages for air circulation and to keep fruit off the ground. Remove suckers just beyond the first two leaves that develop.
