Country kitchens

The kitchen really is the heart of the home!
  • Southwest style

This adobe-style house on the Chama River in New Mexico features beautiful Southwest style throughout. To keep the open, airy feel of the home, the owners decided not to install upper cabinets. There is storage in lower cabinets on the back wall and in the counter, which also has a ledge at bar-stool height.

  • John Deere kitchen

Green is the color of choice for both tractors and kitchens at this country home. From John Deere green paint on the walls to tractor signs and other collectibles, the kitchen is tricked out!

  • Custom cupboards

This cozy kitchen makes the most of basic white cabinets. Bottom cabinets are dressed up with vintage-style pulls, and glass cupboards and open shelving on top keep an open feeling. The homeowner has painted a couple of cupboards with chalkboard paint, which creates a great place for jotting down menus, grocery lists and reminders.

  • Handy shelf

The kitchen windowsill is a great place to set plants and a few favorite pieces of pottery, but the sill usually isn't very deep, and the items are in the way if you want to open the window. This homeowner came up with the great idea of mounting a shelf right on the molding around the window. Now there's a deeper shelf to display items, but the window can still be opened.

  • Extra appliances

Sue's kitchen doubles as a laundry room, with a stackable washer and dryer located right next to the refrigerator. Not only is this a great space-saver, but it's also very convenient for a busy mom! The tile-topped island features a wine rack and shelf for baskets underneath.

  • Super storage

Since Sue's kitchen has vaulted ceilings, there's plenty of room for overhead shelving. These shelves both offer storage for items that aren't used every day, plus a handy place to display antiques.
