    A fresh start

Back in 2009, John and Marina Backes left their hobby poultry farm in New Jersey and landed on 90 acres in Seymour, Missouri. There, they visited nearby farms to get a feel for what was being grown and raised in the area.

Since their property wasn’t ideal for crop farming and they weren’t excited about the idea of raising cattle, the couple chose to raise hogs, which weren’t being raised by many farms in their area.  They named their farm ‘Circle B Ranch’ to reflect the circle of life happening through their work.

    The hogs

Circle B Ranch is home to about 300 hogs at any given time, but all at different stages of development. Berkshire and Red Wattle hogs are raised on the farm and farrow out in the woods or in farrowing huts.

“We really like to have people see how happy our hogs are being outside rather than in confinement,” says Marina.

Hogs living on Circle B Ranch live a high-quality life and are able to move about the property freely.

    At home in nature

There is not a single barn on Circle B Ranch’s 90 acres. All hogs are raised completely outdoors and explore the woods and fields of the hilly farm. They forage for most of their food but are supplemented with all-natural feed with vitamins and minerals, too.

“We handle them humanely and we raise them, ourselves,” Marina says. “They have a really good life.”

John and Marina have always adhered to all Animal Welfare standards and enjoy working full-time on the farm with the animals each day.

    Keeping up with demand

Marina and John have found that there is a strong desire for meat that has been produced naturally in their area. They have no trouble selling their products once they’re processed.

“A lot of people are looking for a humanely raised product that comes from a family farm, “ Marina says. “Our animals are raised 100% outside.”

In the summer, Circle B hotdogs and sausages are hot commodities. When it gets colder, sales of shoulder cuts and pork chops go up noticeably. Circle B offerings can be purchased on their website, through specific stores in Springfield, St. Louis and Kansas City, and at the Greater Springfield and Midtown St. Louis farmers markets.

    More than pork

Marina, formerly an upscale caterer, also takes pride in the ranch’s value-added products. Circle B Ranch offers specialty barbeque sauce, cranberry chutney, and marinara sauce made by Marina in a certified kitchen. The farm also offers popular homemade meatballs made with a family recipe.

To connect customers to their products, Marina tries to blog every week about what she’s cooking. Enticing pictures and quality recipes are provided through the blog.

“It gives customers a way of utilizing our products,” Marina says. “They love the recipes!”

    Open for visits

“We are very transparent about the way we raise our animals,” says Marina.

About two-dozen visitors stop by Circle B Farm each month to see just how their favorite pork products are being brought up. Guests must make an appointment, but are offered a tour of the farm and can see animals from a distance to avoid any kind of germs reaching the hogs.

“I want people to come and visit us and get to know us,” Marina says. “That way they know that we’re raising really good products.”
