Make your bed

Think of your lawn as a garden of grass. You need to prepare the soil before planting yoru garden. Your sod bed should be an inch or so lower than any walkways, so the new lawn will be even with sidewalks and driveways. Dig organic material and fertilizer into the soil, then work the area with a rake until it's smooth and level.
