Reader ideas for a rolling gate, a space-saving phone center and more
All Around the Farm: A page written by our readers
If you find yourself inspired by warming temperatures and fresh, spring breezes, put that burst of energy to good use -- improve something! Perhaps you can replace a chain saw guard lost in the snow or modify a gate so it's easier to open. Maybe you can build a compact work station or a small, but useful, greenhouse.
High-riding gate
Take the burden out of opening gates by mounting a small wheel (from a lawn mower or moving dolly, for example) to the bottom of the gate panel. A spindle can be made from a simple bolt.

Communications center saves space
This telephone center works great for your home, garage, shed, or horse barn.
It not only offers a place to write messages and keep lists but also has shelves for storing telephone directories or owners' manuals for vehicles and equipment.
This design saves a lot of room, too. The stool tucks underneath the unit when not in use.

Greenhouse on-the-go
This portable greenhouse gives us a head start in the spring and extra protection in the fall. The light rod and flat iron hoop framework form a track for raising and lowering the plastic front and back.
Curtains can be set at any height by adding light chain. Ends can be opened and closed. The entire unit can be easily disassembled or moved intact.

Chain saw protection
Replace a lost saw guard by constructing this cover from two pieces of 1x6-inch board nailed to a 1x1-inch shim. Or use whatever size necessary to fit your blade. A rubber strap secures the saw.
