Portable chicken house

I used half of a wagon that my father bought from Sears in the late 1950s to build a chicken house. The side boards are off of a loading chute, the door was made out of boards from old gates, and the roof was tin left over from when I sided my shed.

Vine-ripened tomatoes

Continue to vine-ripen an heirloom tomato, even after the delicate skin begins to crack, by enveloping it in a clear sandwich bag. Gently ease the bag up over the fruit from below, then close the top around the stem with a twist tie.

Mower deck blower

Instead of using a water hose to clean your mower deck after use, fire up the leaf blower. It will blow every speck of debris off the mower and undercarriage without rusting parts or rotting belts.
- J.W., Georgia

Frugal fire starters

To make your own fire starters, melt old or unused candles or wax in an old slow cooker. Dip pinecones into the wax, then lay the pinecones on waxed paper to dry. It works great and feels good to be frugal!
- C.H., Georgia
