Polaris Launches Rec-Utility Vehicle: The General

The new General combines the best of the RZR and Ranger side-by-side machines.

Polaris is known for its hardworking Ranger utility vehicle as well as the thrill-inducing RZR recreational machine. But what if you want the best of both worlds? A machine that can stand up to a 12-hour day spot spraying weed patches and then transform into a beast on the trails, making you forget about your long work day. Polaris now has a solution – the General.

“This vehicle is the most versatile side-by-side we’ve ever built, made for those who want to battle it all,” says Tim Blinkhorn, GM for Polaris Ranger and General. “Whether it’s dominating any trail or conquering any job, the Polaris General delivers.”

To be a solid rec-utility vehicle, a machine must excel in multiple areas, including power, payload, off-road capability, and comfort.

Whether you need power for fun or work, the General delivers with a 100-hp. ProStar 1000 engine. Like other ProStar engines, the ProStar 1000 has electronic fuel injection, dual overhead cams, and four valves per cylinder. The engine cranks out 65 foot-pounds of torque, and with the General’s power-to-weight ration you can accelerate from 0 to 40 mph in under 4 seconds.

The General’s standard two-inch receiver can tow 1,500 pounds. If you need to haul more gear, you can throw up to 600 pounds in the cargo box. The cargo box is smaller than a Ranger’s cargo box by about 5 inches. However, Polaris is offering a bed extender accessory for the General.

Off-road capability
For a smooth ride, the General has an 81-inch wheelbase complemented with a performance-oriented suspension. The dual a-arm front suspension offers 12 inches of travel with closer to 13 inches of travel in the rear. Standard front and rear sway bars reduce body roll on trail corners. Ground clearance comes in at 12 inches unloaded and drops to 7 when loaded down with 600 pounds.

To put more power to the ground, the General features close ratio all-wheel drive (AWD). When needed, all four wheels automatically engage for more forward traction and then disengage when four-wheel drive is no longer needed. In addition to AWD, the General has an engine braking system and standard electronic power steering.

Climb into the General and you’ll quickly see that the cab is also a mix between the RZR and Ranger. Two bolstered bucket seats provide a secure feel for aggressive riding, similar to the RZR. Yet, the cab also provides 23 liters of integrated storage to keep work essentials close. Factory installed half doors keep debris out of the cab, but also offer an easy ingress and egress.

Inside the cab is an all-new customizable instrumentation cluster that tilts with the steering wheel so you can easily see the digital and analog gauges for speed, engine RPM, and other trip information. The center console includes a 12-volt outlet and two cup holders.

The General will be available in three different models. The base model is available with in-mold plastic in Indy Red for $15,999. The General Velocity Blue includes a low profile front bumper, 4,500-pound winch, 14-inch cast aluminum wheels, and 27-inch GBC Dirt Commander tires for $17,499. The General Deluxe Orange Burst includes the features on the Velocity Blue plus adjustable Fox shocks, roof, rear-view mirror, and MTX Premium Soundbar for $19,999.

Polaris has developed 30 brand new accessories for the General and an additional 90 common-fit items are also compatible. The cab frame features profile tubing that works with the proven Polaris Pro-Fit Lock & Ride accessories, including windshields, roofs, doors, and rear panels.
