All About ATVs

Our complete ATV test yields results able to help you choose the perfect ride.

Pages in this Story:

All types of variety

This past September, Living the Country Life magazine teamed up with the editors of Successful Farming magazine, our sister publication, to complete the most exhaustive evaluation of all-terrain vehicles and utility vehicles ever conducted. This 12-member team put 18 vehicles to the test on the mountains and in the fields surrounding the Little Goose Ranch near Sheridan, Wyoming. These were actual tests performed by experienced riders in real-life conditions.

With evaluation segments including ease of shifting the transmission, ease of engaging four-wheel drive and differential lock, steering responsiveness and maneuverability, acceleration, braking, noise level, and general fit and finish, the testing was thorough and intensive.

So many choices!
With the variety of ATVs on the market today, it's easy to be overwhelmed. The range of engine sizes is wide open, and the specifications for each seem to be endless. As if that weren't enough, each of these vehicles can be decked out with any number of accessories, including racks, trailers, covers, and boxes.

Though the category of large ATVs (600-cc's and bigger) is growing, the 400-cc range remains the most popular. That's why the tests targeted this category and why this product guide examines those vehicles.

With the variety of ATVs on the market, making the final decision can be a tough one. Justin Davey recently took part in an extensive ATV test, providing first-hand knowledge of the many vehicles available (thats Davey giving the Arctic Cat 700 EFI 4x4 Automatic a run). This product guide will help narrow your search.

There is also a link to it in the "All about ATVs" story above. Our evaluation results include tables showing vehicle ratings on a scale of 1 to 5, with 5 being the highest, as well as other information. Again, thanks for reading!

This article is interesting; however you have mixed ATV's and UTV's together in the comparison and that can be confusing since they are greatly different. I also find it far more valuable to have the comparison charts assembled in a table format in order to directly compare the results for the models tested. I currently use an Arctic Cat 650 4WD equipped with a winch for pulling a disc for food plots, spraying weeds and trailer for wood and dirt hauling on my 165 acre hunting, fishing, recresation plot. It is a real workhorse!
