John Deere Maintenance Monday: Caring for drive belts

Living the Country Life Radio Program with Betsy Freese

Watch for wear

Radio interview source: Greg Weekes, group product marketing manager, riding lawn equipment, John Deere

In this edition of Maintenance Monday, Lisa from Nebraska says she and her family just moved to an acreage, and bought a used compact tractor for mowing the expansive lawn. One of the concerns she has is keeping its parts up to snuff so she doesn't get caught with a tractor on the fritz and the yard half mowed.

John Deere Product Marketing Manager Greg Weekes says a key part to pay attention to is drive belts. They're located on a mower deck and on a drive system on a smaller tractor. These belts are fundamentally designed to last a long time, and you may only have to replace them once, depending on how much you use the machine. But, there are signs of wear and tear to watch for.

"You're looking for any kind of glazing, meaning it's starting to build up material and starting to slip," Weekes says. "The other thing you look at is it cracking. It's real simple -- just inspect them, look at them, and if they're cracking and they have real deep cracks, more than likely you want to replace them."
