John Deere Maintenance Monday: Checking tires
Living the Country Life Radio Program with Betsy Freese
Radio interview source: Blake Barnes, product manager, John Deere
In this edition of Maintenance Monday, Doug from Tennessee wrote in to ask about tire maintenance on his tractor. John Deere Product Marketing Manager Blake Barnes says the proper air pressure is critical for tire operation. Check it often if you run tires at a low pounds per square inch, or PSI. They're more likely to leak than at a higher PSI. Keep the tire gauge handy -- and make sure you have the right one.
"Provided you are utilizing air you can use a standard gauge," Barnes says. "Now what could be unique is depending on your application, you might actually have liquid inside your tires. And if that's the case, you'll want to make sure that you have a gauge that handles both air and liquid, and the recommendation is to move the valve stem to the lowest location on the tire, and then check your pressure with the valve stem all the way at the bottom."
Did you know that not all air is the same? Air from a compressor is about 78% nitrogen and 21% oxygen. Oxygen can seep through tire walls, but nitrogen can't. With that in mind, some people are now filling their tires with pure nitrogen.
