John Deere Maintenance Monday: Filter maintenance
Living the Country Life Radio Program with Betsy Freese
Radio interview source: Blake Barnes, product manager, John Deere
In this edition of Maintenance Monday, Brian from Texas wants to know about filter maintenance on utility tractors, and how to know when they need some attention. Next to oil changes, proper filter maintenance is the most important regular servicing your machine will need to keep it running smoothly. How frequently you change the filter depends a lot on how often you use the tractor, as some filters are replaced according to the number of hours they've been used.
John Deere Product Marketing Manager Blake Barnes says your local dealer and the operator's manual will help you keep track of what needs to be changed when.
"We have engine oil filters of course, and provide the recommendations on when you replace those filters," Barnes says. "We also have air filters. There's a primary air filter and also a secondary air filter. In general, you're going to replace the primary annually and you just want to make sure it's clean every 300 hours. And then the secondary air filter, generally that's replaced about every two years or 1,500 hours."
Fortunately, an indicator light comes on when the engine air filter needs to be switched out. Depending on the engine, the oil filter will need to be changed after the first 100 hours, and then generally every 300 hours. If your tractor has a cab, there is an air filter to replace there.
