John Deere Maintenance Monday: Fuel-saving tips
Living the Country Life Radio Program with Betsy Freese

In this edition of Maintenance Monday, Allison from Wyoming has a question that's on everybody's mind in this time of high gas prices: how to get the best performance out of your utility tractor while saving fuel.
Improving performance also depends on the task, says John Deere Product Marketing Manager Blake Barnes. So try to "gear up" and "throttle down".
"You can always try to shift up to a higher speed and then throttle back to have the same ground speed, and you can actually get a fuel savings," Barnes says. "It doesn't matter if you're in a transport application or a material handling task -- that holds true. One thing you want to keep in mind is whenever you throttle back, it will ultimately impact your hydraulic performance a little bit so it can reduce your cycle time."
One concern is overloading the engine. As you practice gear-up and throttle-down, occasionally open the throttle. As long as the engine readily picks up speed, overloading is not a problem.
