John Deere Maintenance Monday: Greasing the tractor

Living the Country Life Radio Program with Betsy Freese

Where does the grease go?

Radio interview source: Richard Kershner, product manager, John Deere

In this edition of Maintenance Monday, we're answering a question from Jason in Oklahoma. He just bought a used compact tractor, and it needs a little greasing, but he's not sure exactly where the grease points are.

John Deere Product Manager Richard Kershner says if Jason got the tractor's owner's manual with the purchase, it will tell him. If not, there are a few places he can start with.

"A couple of key places that will require lubrication on compact tractors are your three-point-hitch components, and that would be your lift links and your center link on the machine," Kershner says. "And then there are two or three fittings on the front four-wheel-drive axle -- on your tie rod ends and possibly on your trunnion as well."

Some tractors will also need attention to the hydrostatic drive pedals, and forward and reverse HST pedals. Kershner recommends lubing up these areas after every ten hours of use.

Lubrication points vary from model to model, so you'll want to refer to your owner's manual or consult a dealer to double check what your machine needs.
