John Deere Maintenance Monday: Load balancing

Living the Country Life Radio Program with Betsy Freese

Pages in this Story:

Tires are important

Radio interview source: Jason Breuer, product manager, John Deere

In this edition of Maintenance Monday, we're answering a question from Jack in Wyoming. He just moved to a very rocky area and will be moving a lot of the stones to another location. He's concerned about balancing the front loader with the rear of his compact tractor.

John Deere Marketing Representative Jason Breuer says for safety and performance of the tractor, the first thing you have to do is make sure the tires are right for the job. Each tire has a load index rating for the weight you'll be lifting with front attachments. Equally as important is to make sure the load is counter-balanced in the back. This is called "ballasting".

"Basically if you have too much weight on your loader, you should be properly ballasted so that your rear wheels will not come off the ground -- that would definitely be an unsafe condition that you would want to avoid," Breuer says. "If your tires are under-inflated you would see a 'squat', so-to-speak, of your tires. So you want to make sure that you do have the correct tires, front and rear, for the load that you're lifting."
