John Deere Maintenance Monday: Selecting the right oil for the season

In this edition of Maintenance Monday, we're answering a question from Diane in South Dakota. She's learning tractor maintenance to save money and wants to know what oil to use for colder weather.
John Deere Product Manager Richard Kershner says refer to the owner's manual. It will have oil weight requirements and temperature charts. South Dakota gets pretty chilly, so Diane will need a lower viscosity, or oil weight.
"If you're running heavier viscosity oil in colder climates, the oil takes a little bit longer to warm up and you don't get the proper lubrication in your engine that you need," Kershner says. "So you want to go with that lower viscosity oil that the oil pump's going to be able to pull up and lubricate those engine components faster."
The weight or grade of oil is determined by the Society of Automotive Engineers. The SAE viscosity ratings are: 5-W, 10, 10-W, 20, 20-W, 30, 40 and 50. The W designation means it's designed for winter use. A 10-weight oil is thinner than a 40-weight.
