John Deere Maintenance Monday: Lawn tractors -- fix or replace?

Living the Country Life Radio Program with Betsy Freese

Complicated repairs

Radio interview source: Art Klein, product engineer, John Deere

In this edition of Maintenance Monday, Dave from Iowa says he has a 10-year-old riding lawn tractor that runs pretty well, but he's thinking of updating. He's asking how to decide whether to spend the money for a full overhaul, or just buy a new lawn tractor.

Repairing a mower used to be a Sunday afternoon task, but these days, the machines are too complicated for the average owner's expertise. And as each new model comes out, repairs don't get any easier -- or cheaper.

John Deere Marketing Representative Jason Breuer says if your acreage size hasn't changed and the lawn tractor is still in good working order, it might be worth the overhaul. But it depends.

"Depending on what type of engine you have, if there's been a major failure, you could definitely spend more dollars in repairing the lawn tractor than actually the value of the lawn tractor," Breuer says. "So before you do any major repair on any piece of equipment, you want to make sure that the cost of the repair isn't going to exceed the value of the machine."
