John Deere Maintenance Monday: Stalled lawn tractor

In this edition of Maintenance Monday, we're answering a question from Deborah in Alabama. She wonders what's going on when her mower dies in tall grass. It seems to kill the battery.
John Deere Product Manager Greg Weekes says sometimes when a mower hits tall grass, there isn't enough torque to get through it, and the engine dies. In this case, you may have to mow it twice -- one pass with the deck up high, and then again at the regular height.
Also keep the mower deck clean. Grass sticks there over time, especially if you mow when it's wet. Clumped-up grass makes it hard for the blades to turn. Pull the spark plug before checking under the deck.
Weekes says if you make these adjustments and the battery still won't fire up the machine, there might be something going on with the charging system.
"The system may not be recharging the battery," Weekes says. "When you try to restart a hot engine, and it's been running for a long time cutting grass, that's one of my suspicions -- that it's the charging system. Something funny's going on there."
