John Deere Maintenance Monday: How to choose tires

In this edition of Maintenance Monday, we're answering a question from Jim in Kentucky. He's buying a new compact tractor soon and is a bit baffled by the tire choices.
Ag Engineer Dick Parish with the Louisiana State University Ag Center says there are three basic kinds of rear tires used on compact tractors.
There's the "agricultural lug tread", or R1, the typical tractor tire used for general farming. The second type is the "turf tread", or R3. It's similar to what you'd find on a riding lawn mower. Parish says the third choice is the "industrial tread", also called R4.
"This is sort of a compromise," Parish says. "It has lugs somewhat like the agricultural tires, but the lugs generally have less angle on them, the tires are generally a little wider, the lugs tend to be rounded, and there's more lug surface area. You don't get quite as much traction as the agricultural lugs, but you do considerably less damage to turf."
Many compact tractors sold now come with the industrial tread tires. It's a good choice if you use your tractor for a little bit of everything.
