John Deere Maintenance Monday: Preventing rust

Living the Country Life Radio Program with Betsy Freese

Pages in this Story:

Water is the enemy

Radio interview source: Dick Parish, professor of agricultural engineering, Louisiana State University Ag Center

In this edition of Maintenance Monday, we're answering a question from Sara in Arkansas. She and her husband are the proud owners of a brand new utility tractor and a few accessories to go with it. It's bright and shiny now, and they're asking for tips on preventing corrosion and rust from forming.

Dick Parish with the LSU Ag Center says for decades, manufacturers have done a great job with paint coatings. You'll see tractors that are 50 or 60 years old that may look faded, but still have the original paint intact. Parish says rust prevention maintenance comes down to how the owner takes care of it. Remember, rust considers water its best friend, so keep the tractor dry.

"You're going to get it wet to some extent, but if you can store it in a dry location, that helps more than anything else," Parish says. "Store it where it's not going to be rained on, and not going to have water condensing on it from dew. Have it under a shelter where it stays dry. That's one of the most important things."
