John Deere Maintenance Monday: Repainting a hitch

Living the Country Life Radio Program with Betsy Freese

Pages in this Story:

Prevent rust

Radio interview source: Blake Barnes, group product marketing manager, John Deere

In this edition of Maintenance Monday, Doug in Alabama emailed to say his tractor's hitch component is a little scuffed up, and he wonders if it should be repainted.

Absolutely, says Blake Barnes, a product manager with John Deere. It's common to have wear and tear on a hitch, particularly on the lower stabilizers, which keep the hitch from going side to side. So if the component has gouges in the paint, Barnes recommends giving it a quick re-spray to avoid rust buildup.

"The problem with rust is really once it starts, it's tough to stop," Barnes says. "You can see that the rust will actually get into the material and it will slowly start to move up through the material itself. And it's so much easier to take care of it by spraying it early and trying to limit the possibility of rust occurring, because if it occurs, now you've just increased the work you have to do. You actually have to go in there and you have to scrub and try to eliminate all that rust before you re-spray it later on."
