Snowmobiles

Novice and experienced riders alike find snowmobiling a fun and exciting way to enjoy those long winter months. But before you take out the sled, make sure the machine suits your driving abilities and the ground youll be covering.

First, decide where youll be riding most often with the machine. Keep the terrain in mind when choosing an engine size and power range of a sled. Snowmobiles are designed for specific tasks, and theyre categorized as such. For example, machines are available in trail, touring, crossover, and mountain models. Explore the different models carefully; each has its advantages and disadvantages depending on your snow conditions and riding style.

Next, review the various engine sizes. Engines are rated in cubic centimeters (cc). Midsize machines typically have 500- to 600-cc engines. While a larger engine usually means more horsepower and speed, it also means these machines need a higher level of rider skill and input.

Ask about accessory options. There may be features on the sled that can be added or altered to better meet your specific needs. What is your price range? Determine what you can realistically afford. Would it be more practical to purchase a used or refurbished machine vs. a new machine? Prices for a new machine range from $6,000 to $10,000 or more.

If possible, test-drive a friends sled or visit your local dealer for a test ride. Theres no better way to see how a machine operates than to experience it firsthand. Your local snowmobile dealer can offer great insight into the pros and cons of a particular machine.

Once you purchase your sled, be sure to invest in the proper clothing. This includes a snowmobile suit, helmet, boots, and gloves. Wearing the correct snowmobile clothing will give you a positive riding experience in cold weather.
