Top 10 questions of a new acreage owner

Living the Country Life Radio Program with Betsy Freese

Green Acres is the place to be

The reality of country life often resembles 'Green Acres' more than 'Gone with the Wind.' We've put together a list of important questions you need to consider so you're not caught by surprise later on.

1. What kind of soils are on the land? This affects the location of your home and is crucial for proper drainage. Heavy clay is good for building a pond, and sandy loam makes a good bed for the septic tank.

2. Do I need permits? Yes, you'll need permits for just about everything. Putting in a septic system, building construction, you name it. Check with your state and local regulatory agencies to learn what's required.

3. What if I have a few acres of cropland? If you don't rent it or mow it, you'll have invasive weeds and irate neighbors. Ask someone to plant a hay crop on it, or plant some native grasses.

4. Can I raise livestock or horses if my land is zoned residential? It all depends on the township. Counties and townships will have the tightest restrictions.

5. How do I plant and maintain a prairie? The land will not automatically evolve back to prairie if you ignore it. The only thing that will grow is noxious weeds. Research the native plants in your area. Natural prairie is mostly grass, but includes wildflowers, too.
