What's bugging your lawn?

It looked great last spring

Your lawn area looked great last spring. It looked pretty good going into summer. Then all of a sudden, in August or early September, spots started appearing. Some areas looked like they were drying out quicker. These patches may have started small with the grass looking pale or discolored before it dried. These patches got bigger and took over more of the lawn. As the spots got bigger, those areas had a spongy feel on the feet. If you reached down and tugged on the grass, it pulled up like freshly cut sod.

If this sounds like what you observed on your lawn, chances are you had grub damage. Grubs feed on the grass roots. If there are enough grubs, they cut off the roots similar to a sod cutters' action. When the roots are severed, the top dries out quickly and the sod is easily lifted up.
