Time for tillers

Spring is here, and it's time to start thinking about your garden. Save yourself from the back-breaking work of a shovel or hoe and consider a garden tiller. Gardeners love tillers because the machines make starting new beds, cultivating weeds, and working in compost much easier.

Tillers come with blades (or tines) in either the front or the back. While front-tine tillers are designed for light maintenance, rear-tine tillers have a gas-powered motor located above the front wheels, which propel the tiller through tough soils.

Transferring power from the engine to the wheels enables the rear-tine tillers to tackle larger jobs in landscaping and serious gardening. Perfect for any acreage and with all the muscle you need, rear-tine tillers only require you to guide the tiller as it does the work. Try a rear-tine tiller this spring.

Rear-tine garden tillers, such as the Simplicity 7016RT pictured above, help start new beds, cultivate weeds, and work in compost. Most models feature forward and reverse operation, tines that dig deep and wide, and plenty of power — perfect for large jobs and tough soils.

BCS

BCS allows you to purchase a two-wheel tractor system and add attachments to it. The BCS 718 tractor has an adjustable handlebar system that provides added antivibration and improves shifting. The tractor also features reverse operation, a separate control to turn your implement on and off independently of the wheels, and a fast transport speed to get it to the garden quickly. The 18-inch rear-mount tiller attachment is rated for an 8-inch tilling depth. With the 18-inch tiller attached, the 718 features both low gear for seedbed preparation and second gear for cultivating. MSRP is $2,399. 800/543-1040 www.livingthecountrylife.com/go/1103
